First Lessons on Banjo is an ultra-easy instruction manual for beginning five-string banjo played in the three finger style in G tuning. It can be used by those with no previous experience with the banjo or music of any sort. It is so basic it can be used even by small children.
The book features very detailed descriptions of even the most basic aspects such as wearing the picks properly, the correct picking motion, and noting the strings properly. These are aspects that are so basic most manuals skip over them. There are many detailed photos, several from the player's point of view, not from in front of the banjo.
This book is designed to aid the novice attempting to learn the 5-string banjo using 3-Finger Style, where the strings are picked by three fingers (thumb, index and middle) of the right hand. Upon completing this volume, you will have learned how to combine left-hand notes with right-hand patterns so as to perform bluegrass style solos and back-up. You will also have the foundation needed to explore other styles of music, such as blues and jazz. No prior knowledge of music or any musical instrument is needed to learn from this method. Enough detail is given to allow the beginner to fully grasp each concept. In addition, exercises are designed to facilitate a gradual increase in the student’s understanding and dexterity. When a new concept is presented for the right hand, the left hand performs previously learned tasks. Likewise, a new left-hand technique is demonstrated with familiar right-hand patterns. This instructional technique is used throughout the text.

Pete Seeger took an interest in playing the 5-string banjo when he was 16 years old after he heard it played at the 1935 Asheville Folk Festival in North Carolina. It wasn't long after, when he was able to have a short lesson with banjoist Bascom Lamar Lunsford, known as the Minstrel of the Appalachians, where Seeger learned the basics of what would become his basic strum. From then on, Seeger made it a point to seek out, listen to, and learn from any banjo players that he met in his travels, learning a number of different playing styles which he experimented with in backing up his vocals. This book looks at the techniques he was using when he was a member of the Almanac Singers in 1941, seven years before the publication of his first banjo method. Join Pete Seeger as he was evolving his early playing technique through the mid-1950s at the dawn of the folk music era!
