The Mandocello is a plucked string instrument of the mandolin family. It is larger than the mandolin, and is the baritone instrument of the mandolin family.

It’s eight strings are in four paired courses, with the strings in each course tuned in unison (the same). Overall tuning of the mandocello is in fifths like a mandolin, but beginning on bass C (C2). It can be described as being to the mandolin what the cello is to the violin. It’s fair to say it’s probably the least known of the main mandolin family of instruments and is still made albeit in smaller numbers.

There isn’t as much choice as its smaller mandolin cousins and they are usually played by musicians wanting something a bit different than the other smaller mandolin style instruments. Eastman and Gold Tone are the most current and well made instruments available.

Important with any instrument but especially with the mandolin family instruments like the Mandocello with it having 8 strings in close pairs, a guitar length scale with a narrowoer neck and fingerboard is the playability. Fully setup in our workshop for the best playability and tone, each Mandocello will be ready to play the day you receive it.
