Description

Martin has built the world’s finest ukuleles since 1916, and we've been building tenor ukes since 1929 that have long been prized for their full-bodied voice and significant volume. The 0 Tenor Uke features a neck, top, back, and sides made from Martin’s coveted stash of sinker mahogany that was salvaged from the bottom of a river in Belize. Sinker mahogany offers a dense and complex tone that makes this model stand out from the crowd. This is due to the very old age of the wood and the accumulated micro-sediments accumulated and engrained in it. A real piece of history and natural beauty. This model includes a gorgeous satin finish and an old-style script logo.

It is a shame that this ukulele is no longer in production. There is probably a limited supply of sinker mahogany, or Martin are holding some back for the centennial year in 2029 to celebrate when they began making tenor ukuleles in 1929. They started making sopranos in 1916, I believe.

Both the look and the smell of the mahogany are quite unique, but the sound is divine. It has an openness and complexity that is probably akin to a vintage Martin. The build quality is excellent, too; it handles very well with a slim, fast, easy-to-use fretboard. It's easy to make chords that ring clear. The nut width is quite narrow at just under 34mm; the string spacing from G to A is 29mm. Most manufacturers' advertising a 38mm nut have a string spacing of 30mm. If you like bling, you might find the ukulele quite plain, although the wood more than makes up for that. There are very few reviews on this ukulele, but Heinrich Pelser's review for Guitar Gallery on YouTube is worth watching. He can play too!
