Steve Noon our company owner writes …When I first took the Deering Calico to an all Ireland fleadh, I couldn’t wait to show it to Kieran. I said to him’ I have a great banjo to show you’ …Kieran replied ‘I’ll be the judge of that!’ …I am delighted to say that Kieran bought the banjo! I have built up a friendship with Kieran over the years and see him from time to time. When I see him these days he always tells me that the Calico is the greatest session and recording banjo that he has ever played.
We set up each banjo with the correct gauge strings for tuning and playing 'Irish tenor banjo' ...At the set-up stage, we file the nut and the bridge to suit the heavier gauge strings and set the action and intonation ...we tune each banjo to G, D, A, E for 'Irish' dropped tuning. Kieran’s uses our Eagle-Puretone strings and we set up his Calico with the following gauges ..1st 12 plain, 2nd 16 plain, 3rd 28 wound phosphor bronze, 4th 38 wound phosphor bronze.

The Deering Calico 19 fret tenor banjo ... is built from eastern hard curly rock maple.It has a clear bright tone with very powerful voice and projection. It has a very comfortable, easy to play neck profile.The Eastern hard rock curly maple neck and resonator are honey stained in colour, and trimmed in purfling and ivoroid binding.
The feel of binding provides a more comfortable neck. Scroll shaped mother-of-pearl inlays are set in the ebony fingerboard. The elegant ebony faced headstock has mother of pearl inlays and is bound in white.
The three ply maple rim, sand cast virgin bell bronze Deering tone-ring and zinc flange construction generate excellent tone and volume.The inside walls of the resonator on the Calico are tapered to maximise the sound and give you instant response and clear tone.
