More about the author Chris McShane

A familiar face on the Folk, Ceilidh and Ukulele scene all over the UK, I am a popular performer, dance caller and workshop leader. A multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, tenor and G-banjo, mandolin and ukulele, I am also an acclaimed composer and arranger.

My concert set includes original material, Music Hall and well known songs with a few twists and surprises to have the audience singing along. A wide range of online and face to face workshops for a variety of instruments is listed on my workshops page.

I have had a long involvement in Folk music both as a member of the Rhythm Chaps Ceilidh Band and as musical director of The Tender Roots Project, Whitby Folk Week Children’s Orchestra and the Barnsley Folk Ensemble. Over the last 8 years, I have worked as a folk and ukulele tutor at the Music 4 People summer school at Giggleswick in the Yorkshire Dales.

Having taught guitar for many years, I have always arranged music for my students and this had led to compositions and arrangements for ensembles and soloists. As well as ensemble arrangements and other compositions, I have also produced a book of tunes arranged for intermediate standard solo guitar entitled Twenty Tunes. I have also written a wide range of folk tunes for solo instruments and Folk Ensembles.

In recent years, I have been active in promoting and teaching the ukulele. The teaching has ranged from one to one lessons alongside online courses and weekend workshops. I also run workshops at festivals and summer schools.

Calling for ceilidhs is another addition to my musical activities and as well as calling with the Rhythms Chaps, I also work with other local bands including Roger the Badger and The Last Drop as well as bands from further afield .
