Considering it was written 34 years ago (1991), it is still very good. If it were written today (2025), the cd would be replaced with a video link. It would make a big difference to see the music played by Pádraig Carroll himself.
I don't think Pádraig's active these days; there are no uploaded videos, that I can find, on Youtube, which is a shame. For today's mandolin players, the book lacks Tableture. By the time one reaches page 20, you need to be able to read music reasonably well, or have a very good ear!

To get you started reading music, investigate a book from 1928! The First Step, How to Play the Mandolin by Mario de Pietro; back in the day, it was 1'6 pence. You can find copies on eBay, mine cost under £8.00 with postage. Mario explains music very well, starts with the basics and takes you through it. By the time you're halfway through the book, you'll be ready for Pádraig. Oddly, you can find re-tinted black & white film/videos of de Pietro on YouTube.

So, I'd recommend Pádraig's The Irish Mandolin, but you'll have to work at it . . . Good luck, I'm enjoying working through it, hope you will too
