The Barnes & Mullin Salvino mandolin is a classic, F-style scroll top mandolin named after a recently uncovered 'Salvino' model from the turn of the 20th century.

Featuring a dark stained solid mahogany top and corresponding dark stained solid maple back and sides, the Salvino mandolin delivers a rich and warm tone with focus and clarity.

Complete with an ovangkol neck and fingerboard, nickel hardware and adjustable ebony bridge, the Salvino is the perfect model for beginners looking to discover the delights of the mandolin for the first time as well as established players wanting to add a great sounding F-style mandolin to their collection.

Commonly played by professional mandolin players, F-style mandolins feature an upper body scroll and scrolled headstock – making them aesthetically distinctive from A-style mandolins. Their more elaborate body and headstock design naturally uses more tonewood materials and requires a greater level of craftmanship.

There is little discernible difference in the sound produced compared to A-style mandolins. However, F-style mandolins are ever so slightly more resonant due to their larger body chamber and tonewood area are historically favoured for bluegrass music, as they are considered to have more 'cut-through' in a ensemble situation.

We supply a wide range of quality mandolins for the beginner through to the accomplished player from brands including Eastman, Weber, Prucha, Davidson, Erin, Buchanan, Seagull, Gold Tone, Ozark, Tanglewood and more. Some mandolins are also available as starter packs.

Mandolins are used in all types of music these days and are popular in folk, Irish, bluegrass, rock and jazz music plus many other genres. Generally available in 2 main body styles, A style mandolins (teardrop) and F style mandolins (more decorative) and also 3 different build types, carved top (same build style as a violin and the most popular build type), flat top which is tradition design, popular amongst the folkies and the Neapolitan style with its bowl or round back design. Whether it is an all laminate beginners model, solid top step up mandolin or a top of the range hand made and hand carved model, we have instruments to suit all players. We also offer a great choice of mandolin beginners packs.

Fitted with 8 strings which consist of 4 lots of 2 strings of the same gauge or in ‘unison’, mandolins are most commonly picked with a plectrum rather than fingerpicked like the guitar. Playability is paramount with any instrument but especially with the mandolin with it having 8 strings, short scale, narrow neck and fingerboard.
