More information about Ewan

Ewans steel string models are inspired, in part, by the pre-war guitars made by companies like Martin and Gibson. Initially, by studying those instruments and the traditional methods used by their luthiers, Ewan has gone on to design his own shapes and bracing patterns. His craft brings this style of guitar up to date.?

'I currently offer four models, Parlour, 00, OM and Small Jumbo. These bespoke instruments are handmade to the individual player’s needs, using the finest tone woods and materials.

As far back as I can remember I have always been drawn to the guitar. My Dad had an old classical that I used to play around on and when I was old enough my folks arranged lessons. From then on I was hooked and would spend most of my time playing.?

It wasn’t long before I was given an electric guitar. As an eleven year old I took this apart and put it back together again. That guitar never quite played the same again but it sparked my interest in guitar construction. From there I became interested in steel string acoustic guitars, how they produced sound and how they were put together.?

Moving on a few years, I applied for the Stringed Musical Instrument Making Course at Anniesland College in Glasgow. There, I studied under the brilliant tutorage of Bill Kelday and Paul Hyland, both excellent and successful Luthiers. In my first year, with my first guitar, I won an award at the Craftex Competition, run by the Trades House Of Glasgow.?

Due to the quality of my work, I was offered the opportunity to study under Bill and Paul for an extra year. I completed that year, after which I set up my workshop in Stirlingshire where I enjoy handcrafting my instruments. I use a mix of traditional methods and materials, as well as including some more modern techniques and finishes.?

For me, I always thought the greatest joy would come from being able to play one of my own guitars. I quickly learned that the greatest joy comes from hearing one of my guitars being played by a great player.,
